College Prep Checklist for High School Juniors

As high school juniors dive into their second-to-last year, their focus often shifts as they start to take college prep a bit more seriously.

This pivotal phase demands proactive engagement in various facets of college readiness, from standardized testing to college exploration and GPA maintenance. This article outlines a comprehensive college prep checklist for juniors to use as they navigate this intimidating but exciting time of their life.

1. Prepare for Standardized Testing:

Junior year is a crucial time for standardized testing. Considering most colleges require scores to be submitted with applications, it’s important for students to take a strategic approach to test preparation.

The first step is to figure out which standardized tests are required by your top college choices—whether it’s the SAT, ACT, or both. Once you’ve got that sorted, make sure to register for and schedule the tests well in advance. This will give you plenty of time to prepare and, if needed, schedule any retakes.

Also, don’t skip the chance to take the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall. It’s a great way to get a sneak peek at your testing strengths and areas for improvement before you tackle the big tests. As you gear up, make the most of practice exams, study guides, and test prep courses to boost your readiness.

2. Explore Potential Colleges, Universities, or Trade Schools:

No matter what post-high-school-education plans are in the works, junior year is the time to delve deeper into researching and evaluating those plans. Explore different education opportunities. If there’s an inkling of doubt about traditional forms of education such as colleges or universities, now’s the time to look into college alternatives. Consider factors like location, size, academic programs, campus culture, and financial considerations when compiling your list.

Doing thorough research on each college gives a clear picture of what makes them all unique. If possible, plan campus visits to soak up the atmosphere and get a real sense of what campus life would be like at that college. And remember, there are plenty of chances to attend college fairs, information sessions, and virtual tours!

3. Maintain a Good GPA:

Maintaining a strong GPA is crucial during your junior year, as your academic record is a key part of college applications. Students should focus on doing well in their classes, and not hesitate to seek help or tutoring in subjects that are tough for them.

Consistently strong academic performance and a clear commitment to scholastic achievement can open doors to more competitive colleges and universities, expanding a student’s chances of admission.

4. Early Summer Before Senior Year—Build Letters of Recommendation:

Junior year is an excellent time to start securing letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or mentors. Reach out to them, share your interest, and ask if they’d be willing to write a letter for you. While it might seem early, getting this step done now will make senior year go much smoother.

Come to the recommendation request prepared with relevant information about your academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, and college aspirations, as well as clear deadlines for submission. Build positive relationships with your recommenders and communicate openly to ensure they can effectively advocate for you in their letters.

As the academic year winds down, use the early summer months to finalize your letters of recommendation. Follow up with your recommenders to confirm their commitment and provide any additional information or updates related to your college applications. Remember that some colleges require recommenders to submit their letters directly, rather than giving them to you. Check the submission requirements for each school and inform your recommenders well in advance. Keep communication open to address any concerns or questions they may have, and be sure to express your gratitude for their support throughout the process.

Junior year represents a critical phase in the college preparation journey, one of which demands proactive engagement and strategic planning. By adhering to this comprehensive junior year college prep checklist with diligence and foresight, students can position themselves for success in the competitive landscape of college admissions, paving the way for a bright and promising future.
